Opinion: Poor Parenting Caused So Much Harm in South Sudan

January 1, 2021 — Most parents in South Sudan are not raising their children in the right way, particularly in Juba. Children are sent out in the name of Christmas and New Year celebrations yet they don’t know the danger they exposed them.

Most children under the ages of 5-12 years old are allowed to go out alone without any parents or adults to take care of them. I know we do not have a smart place for children to play in Juba, however, parents should keep the children inside the compound or go and visit other relatives together instead of allowing them to go outside by themselves. Children are forming groups of which they are committing many crimes like fighting, stealing, and the list goes on.

My heart was broken when I saw a girl about 8 or 9 years old kissing a boy about her age in the name of a boyfriend/ girlfriend. What do they know about a kiss or love? The only love they need is the love of their parents. As a parent, it’s your responsibility to take care of the children while they are still young.

The Bible said in the book of Proverbs 22:6 “Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” (KJV)

How are you training your children as a parent? Buying them new clothes doesn’t make you a responsible parent. There is a lot more important responsibility than buying clothes.

In the attached pictures below, the children, about 5 years old, are moving at 9:00 pm.

As a responsible parent, how do you feel when your child is out until that time? Poor parenting in South Sudan is the reason we are suffering every step of the way. Some children, who were not raised properly are causing chaos in every corner now in the country. It’s every parent’s responsibility to train their children in the right way.

The elevation or deterioration of the future of society will be determined by the manners and morals of the youth growing up around us.

As the youth are educated, and as their characters are moulded in their childhood to virtuous habits, self-control, and temperance, so will their influence be upon society.

I wish my brothers and sisters who got injuries today at Nyakuron cultural centre a quick recovery.

I appeal to the administration of the Nyakuron cultural centre not to allow children under 15 years old to enter without any parents or adults. They said the children are the future of the country and if we fail to raise them in a good way now, how do we expect to have a good country in future.

I wish everyone Merry Christmas and a happy new year!

May God bless South Sudan and the parents who took care of their children!
