South Sudanese students to evacuate Ethiopia amid deepening crises

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

November 9,2021— South Sudanese embassy in the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia announced that South Sudanese students, who have been studying in the neighbouring Ethiopia, will soon be evacuated back to South Sudan due to deepening crises between the Federal Government and the regional state of Tigray.

In a statement extended to Nyamilepedia, Mr. James Morgan, the South Sudan Ambassador to Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, says at least 59 South Sudanese students studying under government scholarship in Amhara region will be evacuated to Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa on Wednesday amid arrangements to repatriate back to South Sudan.

“The South Sudanese Ambassador to Ethiopia, James Morgan, has said that 59 South Sudanese students on government scholarship in Ethiopia’s Amhara region will be evacuated on Wednesday to Addis Ababa and thereafter flown back to the country”, Ambassador Morgan stated in a statement.

Ambassador Morgan fears that their lives are in danger in the face of the on going fighting in Ethiopia and particularly in Amhara region that is now believed to be under the control of the Tigray state government.

According to the top diplomat, the students are mainly from Bahir Dar and Gondar universities.

He also revealed that students will only come back to Ethiopia for studies once the internal conflicts of the host country are contained.

“The students will resume their studies once the situation deescalates”,the statement of Ambassador further emphasized.

Early this week, the U.S government ordered its citizens to evacuate Ethiopia due to the alleged rumors purporting that Tigray rebel are just 4 hours away from the capital, Addis Ababa.

In response to Western Media reports, Ethiopians went on protests in Addis Ababa refuting the reports although the national army seems to have lost the northern regions to the rebels.

Due to poor education system in South Sudan, many South Sudanese students have been stranded in different countries across Africa and some in other continents within the last 5 years.
