CEPO conducts intra-payam communal dialogue, called for peaceful co-existence in Western Bahr el Ghazal state

October 27, 2021 – An intra-payam dialogue ended in South Sudan’s Western Bahr el Ghazal State with calls for peaceful co-existence among the communities in Jur River County.

A total of 60 participants attended the two-day dialogue organized by Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO) in partnership with DT-Global in Mapel payam. 

The event, attended by community leaders, chiefs, women and youth leaders, came in the wake of existing gaps which have negatively impacted on the well-being of communities in the payam.

According to CEPO’s regional coordinator, Stephen Robo Musa, the intra-payam dialogue aimed at identifying various issues affecting communities and seek local remedies to address them.

“This intra-payam dialogue is important because it encourages the culture of resilience among communities. This enables them to live with resources within their capacities,” he stressed. 

Speaking at the opening of the dialogue on Tuesday, Benjamin Bol, the deputy commander for academic training center commended CEPO for promoting peaceful co-existence among communities.

He appealed to the participants to be frank while airing out their grievances during the forum.

The county police director, Adam Isaac urged CEPO to conduct more trainings on mechanisms for conflict mitigation and prevention among communities.

For his part, Kon Akot, the area paramount chief applauded CEPO for its watchdog role of promoting peaceful existence and social cohesion among the people of South Sudan.

Franco John, the CEPO representative at the two-day dialogue stressed the need for social cohesion and the important role it plays in promoting peaceful co-existence among communities. 

Intra-communal conflict is rife in many parts of the young nation, especially in the cattle-keeping communities, with cattle raids often leading to violent conflicts.
