Kiir-Machar meeting breaks “deadlock” on main security issue – presidency

September 9th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – South Sudan President Salva Kiir Mayardit and main armed opposition leader Dr. Riek Machar who are meeting in Juba have agreed on main security issue, the VIP protection force, the presidency said in a statement.

“The face-to-face meeting of President Salva Kiir Mayardit and Dr. Riek Machar has broken-down the deadlock in the peace implementation process leading towards the formation of the Revitalized Transitional Government of National Unity,” the presidency said in a statement seen by Nyamilepedia.

The statement said the two principals focused on discussion that aimed at breaking deadlock on issues regarding the formation of the revitalized unity government time.

“The meeting focused on the need to timely establish the security arrangements, especially on ensuring that the necessary Eighty-Three Thousand forces for the Protection of the Presidency are mobilized, trained, and ready for the task,” the statement said.

The Chairperson of National Pre-Transitional Committee (NPTC) Tutkew Gatluak and SPLM-IO deputy chairman Hendry Odwar said in a joint statement following a handshake by Kiir and Machar that the two men will resume their meeting tomorrow.

This morning, Machar arrived in Juba in an unusual visit to meet Kiir over stalled peace process. He was accompanied by Sudan’s deputy chairman of Sovereignty Council General Mohamed Hamdan Daglo/Hemeti.
