Government military operations underway in Unity State after peace talk adjournment

April 29th 2018 (Nyamilepedia) – South Sudan’s government is continuing offensive in Unity State against armed opposition troops loyal to the country’s former First Vice President Riek Machar, residences told the Nyamilepedia.

“Now our innocent people are being bombarded by the Nguen Manytuil  every day killing children, women and elderly people. They also burned to ashes villages in Gezira on the pretext that we accommodates rebels,” one resident said.

Another resident said that government troops bombarded Gezira area near Unity State’s capital Bentiu over the weekend killing number of civilians.

“First of all, the shelling was carried out by government in Gezira killing two children and injuring two other children and an elderly person beside burning the whole village,” Another resident from the United Nation refugee protection camp in Rubkona told the Nyamilepedia on the condition of anonymity.

The same resident revealed that there has been intensive immigration of civilian to the United Nation protection of civilians site in Bentiu citing government offensives in areas around unity.

“People have since last week started to flee to the UNMISS PoC site in Bentiu’s Rubkona town due to atrocities committed by the government. Militias allied to the so call First Vice President Taban Deng Gai lead by Dor Manjur, Makal Kuol and Puljang Top are all over the land now killing and displacing people,” he said.

In recent days government troops have escalated military operations against the opposition despite a ceasefire deal signed by a number of armed groups and the government in December 2017.

Government operation is currently undergoing in Southern Unity and a lot of civilians are being displaced.

Last week, the IGAD adjourned the South Sudan peace talks to the 17th of May 2017 after an early postponement.
