The Ethiopian federal government declared a declaration on the 28th of June 2021 after rebels allied to Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) regained control of Mekelle, the capital City of Northern Tigray on Monday.

In a statement obtained by Nyamilepedia, the AUC Chairperson called on Ethiopian authorities to work towards a comprehensive and all-encompassing permanent ceasefire to pave way for sustainable peace in the Tigray region.

He also called on warring parties to stop engaging in military confrontation and take mutual responsibility to create a sustainable atmosphere that reflects peace and security to the civil population.

“In this regard, the Chairperson calls on for the end to all hostilities, and calls on all parties to uphold their responsibilities under international law to protect civilians and guarantee safe access for humanitarian actors to render crucial services to the affected population in the region “, Faki said in a statement.

Mr. Faki said a political solution is the only means to end the conflict, pledging the full support of the Commission to the Ethiopian government in its quest to pacify the region.

“The Chairperson further calls for a political solution to the conflict in the Tigray region,” the statement reads in part.

“The Chairperson reaffirms the continuous readiness of the African Union to support all Ethiopian government efforts in pursuit of peace and stability in the country,” the statement continues.
