According to UNMISS report, the UN Mission in South Sudan is funding the construction of the Outpatients department, emergency room, a pharmacy and offices.

The United Nations Mission in South Sudan is humbled by critical concerns raised by the suffering population at the Bor hospital.

Speaking to UNMISS staff, a patient at the Bor Hospital, Mary Ajoh Deng, said she was waiting for hours to get treatment but with the construction of the outpatient department, the wait could be shortened.

“I have been waiting here for hours and I have not yet seen a doctor. The addition to the hospital will provide space for the doctors to carry out their job,” says Mary Ajoh Deng, a mother of six seeking medical services for two of her children.

According to Dr. Bol Chaw, a Medical Director, the community appreciates the in-kind donation of the funds to extend the hospital.

“We are grateful that they came up with the funds, almost 100,000 dollars. I am happy that we will have this new, spacious building,” Bol says.

Speaking to the media, Deborah Schein, the Head of the peacekeeping mission’s field office in the region, promised that the construction will be finished by January 2021 or in two months time.

Deborah expressed her happiness on behalf of the mission saying that their contribution will serve several functions that include treatment and monitoring of minor illnesses and emergencies.

“This is a referral hospital serving all of Jonglei State. I am pleased that we can contribute to the health and well-being of its citizens,” Ms Schein said.

She further reiterated that the new outpatient department will replace “a previous incarnation, demolished a few months ago because its precarious state was deemed dangerous.”

UNMISS has awarded the contract to the national non-governmental organization Hope South Sudan with expectations that the new project will soon ease the high demand for medical facilities in Jonglei State.

“Patients from Bor and beyond will no doubt cherish the hospital’s increased capacity. The health care facilities are currently overwhelmed, not least by persons who have been displaced by floods and are in need of medical attention.” UNMISS reports stressed.

“Most primary health care centers in Jonglei State and the neighboring Greater Pibor Administrative Area have also been flooded, adding to the pressure placed on the Bor hospital.” They added.
