South Sudan’s Kiir to release some prisoners on January 1st

December 24th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – South Sudan President Salva Kiir Mayardit said on Tuesday that he will release some prisoners serving different sentences in various prisons in the capital Juba.

There are reportedly over 1300 inmates being jailed at Juba Central Prison who have been sentenced for several crimes.

Speaking to inmates during a visit to Juba Central Prison on Tuesday, Kiir said some prisoners who have served most of their sentences and with good conducts will be released by January 1st 2020.

For those inmates who have stayed in prison for long time and they have good conduct, even if they are left with few months, I have asked and recommended for their pardon, but this didn’t happened,” he said.

“With the few days I will speak to the director of prison, Minister of Justice, Minister of Interior and my Legal Adviser, they will set and bring to me recommendations for your people and I am going to release all of them on 1st of January,” he added.
