South Sudan’s Kiir says war is over, orders release imprisoned Machar spokesman

November 1st 2018 (Nyamilepedia) – South Sudan President, Salva Kiir Mayardiit said on Wednesday that the ongoing civil war has ended ordering the release of opposition leader’so imprisoned ex-spokesman James Gatdet Dak who had been sentenced to death by a Juba court early this year.

Kiir was speaking to the nation during the celebrations of the peace agreement organized by the South Sudan government in the capital Juba which was also attended by prominent opposition figuresearch including the SPLM-IO leader Dr. Riek Machar Teny.

“I want to reiterate in front of all of you and in the presence of all the African and world dignitaries that the war in South Sudan has come to an end,” Kiir told the South Sudanese on Wednesday.

He said he and his rivals in the opposition including opposition leader Dr. Riek Machar Teny have forgiven each other to move South Sudan forward something he said he will be serious to pursue or ordering the release of James Gatdet Dak.

“Dr. Riek Machar and I and all the opposition leaders who signed the agreement have forgiven each other. We consciously decided to move this country forward,” Kiir said.

“James Gatdet and the South African’s national will be released from now on,” he added.

Kiir also ordered the opening of all humanitarian corridors so as to facilitate the movement of both goods and people from a given area to another and the return of the displaced to their places if orgin so as to promote reconciliation.

“This will facilitate the movement of humanitarian supplies because we want all the land routes and river routes to be open. It will facilitate movement of humanitarian supplies, trade, reconciliation and most importantly internally displaced people to return to their homes,” Kiir further said.

Kiir apologize to the citizens
Kiir further apologized to the people of South Sudan for the war saying the responsibility falls on his own should as leader of the country.

“You have endured immense suffering and the weight of responsibility heavily falls on my shoulders as your president … I deeply regret the physical, psychological and emotional wounds you have undeservedly endured. As your president, I want to apologize on behalf of all the parties to the conflict as leadership requires acceptance of responsibility,” he said.
