August 27th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – South Sudan President Salva Kiir Mayardit has said holdout opposition groups who are not part of the revitalized peace agreement are not a threat anymore.

Speaking during a press conference in Kampala following a meeting with President Museveni on Sunday, Kiir said peace has returned to South Sudan saying holdout groups doesn’t represent a threat anymore.

“The forces that are still resistant are not a big threat,” Kiir said at a press conference in Kampala.

He urged all including the South Sudanese people in Uganda as well opposition groups who are still fighting his government to return to the country to participate in the peace-building process.

“I welcome all those that are willing to return home to participate in the transitional government before the national elections that are underway for people to take decision on who is to lead them,” the South Sudanese head of state said.

South Sudan descended into civil war in December 2013 after a disputed in the ruling Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) party ignited fighting in the army triggering a civil war.

Millions of South Sudanese citizens who have fled the war are seeking asylum in Uganda, Kenya, Ethiopia and Sudan.

The government and opposition groups including the main armed opposition group, SPLM-IO, signed a revitalized peace agreement in September 2018 to end the war.

Recent reports by the United Nations and other international observer organizations have stated that the agreement signed in Addis Ababa has led to a decline in fighting across the country easing humanitarian access.
