October 29th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – South Sudan peace monitoring body, the R-JMEC, said on Tuesday that implementation of security arrangements which has been one of the impeding issues to formation of the unity government is behind schedule.

South Sudan government and opposition groups signed a revitalized version of a 2015 peace agreement last year to end one of the bloodiest conflicts in Africa.

Speaking during a meeting of members of the peace monitoring body this morning, interim chair of the Reconstituted Joint Monitoring and Evaluation (R-JMEC) Augustino Njoroge said the parties need to do more to make sure that all the outstanding security arrangements are completed.

There remains much to be done and we continue to urge the parties to the conflict to ensure that the remaining processes are expedited to catch up with lost time,” he said.

During this critical time what is needed is accommodating one another, making compromises and agreeing on concrete measures to implement the key pending tasks of the pre-transitional period,” he added.

South Sudan is away from a two weeks deadline in which the parties to the revitalized peace agreement are required – by the agreement – to form a unity government of 36-months in which President Salva Kiir and SPLM-IO leader Dr. Riek Machar will lead as president and first vice-president respectively.

While Kiir threatened to form a unity government without Machar, the opposition leader said he will not be a part of any unity government formed without the outstanding tasks being put in place first.
