President Kiir meets delegation from the community of Sant’Egidio over peace talks. .

February 2, 2022—South Sudan’s President Salva Kiir has met with a delegation from Community of Sant’Egidio on Monday, February 1, 2022.

The Sant’Egidio delegation was led by its Secretary General Paolo Impagliazzo to discuss how the process of Rome Peace Initiative between South Sudan’s government and the holdout opposition groups, which are non-signatory to the 2018 Revitalized Peace Agreement, is proceeding.

“His Excellency Salva Kiir Mayardit, President of the Republic, met with a delegation from the Community of Sant’Egidio led by its Secretary General Paolo Impagliazzo to discuss how the process of Rome Peace Initiative between the government of South Sudan and the non signatory opposition groups, under the meditation of Community of Sant’Egidio is going to proceed”,the by Presidential Unit statement reads.

Speaking to media after the meeting, Dr. Barnaba Marial Benjamin, Minister of Presidential Affairs, said the delegation of Sant’Egidio applauded President Kiir for what he depicted as ” Spirit of encouraging the initiative for comprehensive and sustainable peace and stability across the country.

“… The delegation thanked H.E. President Salva Kiir Mayardit for the spirit of encouraging the initiative for inclusive peace in South Sudan”, Dr. Marial told media.

According to Dr. Marial, President Kiir expressed his heartfelt excitement to Sant’Egidio community for significant support and leadership they had been demonstrating since the inception of peace talks between government and the holdout opposition parties.

“.. H.E. President Salva Kiir Mayardit reiterated his gratitude to the Community of Sant’ Egidio for the support and leadership they have been exhibiting since the commencement of the negotiations between the Government of South Sudan and the non signatory opposition groups to make the Peace process more inclusive”, Marial further emphasized.
