December 2018 (Nyamilepedia) – South Sudan President, Salva Kiir Mayardiit, on Monday met the delegation of the SPLM former detainees led by Rebecca Garang, the widow of the SPLM founder Dr. John Garang de’Mabior.

The SPLM Former Detainees is a group of dissident politicians who were initially arrested and detained during the onset of the ongoing South Sudan conflict by President Salva Kiir Mayardiit on the accusation of attempted coup.

Led by Rebecca Garang, the group returned to the country on Saturday after years in exile. Their return is a part of efforts by South Sudanese parties to implement the peace agreement signed in September in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa.

In a statement after meeting President Salva Kiir, Nyadeng said they have come to implement the agreement so as to save the country from collapse and to restart the reconstruction process urging South Sudanese people to forgive them (leaders).

For his part, the Presidential Advisor on Security who is also the Chairman of the National Pre-Transitional Committee, Tut Kew Gatluak, said the discussion focused on the implementation of the revitalized peace deal signed in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa by Kiir and Machar in September 2018.

Under regional and international pressure,  South Sudan President, Salva Kiir Mayardiit and opposition leader Dr.  Riek Machar Teny signed a peace deal in September in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa to end the war.

The agreement in Addis Ababa followed months of intense negotiations among delegates of the government and opposition who must, by the time,  sign a pact or face international or further regional isolation.

The government in late October conducted a peace celebration ceremony in the capital Juba and was attended by regional leaders as well as the SPLM-IO leader Dr. Machar.
