June 18th 2018 (Nyamilepedia) – Position of South Sudan’s government at the ongoing peace consultations in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa is still unchanged according to a opposition official who spoke to the Nyamilepedia from the venue of the talks in Addis Ababa on Monday.

The opposition official said all the opposition groups including the SPLM-IO under the leadership of the country’s former First Vice-President Dr. Riek Machar have agreed to change the system in Juba and form a lean government but the government under the leadership of President Salva Kiir Mayardiit want to maintain the status quo.

A lean government refers to the application of lean product principles and methods to both identify and implement the most efficient way to provide government services.

“All of us (opposition groups) have decided and agreed that the system in Juba must be reformed in order to consider working with President Salva Kiir’s government. But this position is undermined by the government’s position that the status quo must be there and just an extension should be done in stead to accommodate us,” the opposition official who preferred anonymity told the Nyamilepedia on Monday.

He said the opposition groups will not sign a peace agreement that keep the status quo which he said is responsible for the collapse of the peace agreement in July 2016 and lacked the provision of services to the suffering population of South Sudan.

“All of us will not accept the continuation of the status quo if there were to be peace in the country because the same status quo led to the collapse of this peace we are reviving in July 2016,” he further said.
