December 5th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – At least 29 people were killed in South Sudan’s Eastern Lakes on Thursday when two rival clans from Eastern Lakes and Jonglei state clashed over the ownership of an island on the Nile river.

An Area coordinator, Joseph Deng Mawaat said following the bloody clash that the early-morning fierce fighting also left nearly twenty (20) people injured.

The clash involved clans from the states of Eastern Lakes and Jonglei with both claiming ownership of the island, which is strategic as a docking site for boats. Tribal clashes are common in the East African country, which gained independence from Sudan in 2011.

This come less than a week after an inter-communal fighting between Lakes region clans killed almost eighty (80) people. The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) have deployed in the area to help stop future fighting.
