SG Tingo replaces Dr. Dhieu Mathok Ding, the former Secretary General, who defected with other politicians following the resumption of war in Juba in July, 2016.
After a long evacuation of SPLM/SPLA-IO leadership from the forests of South Sudan and DR. Congo, Machar has so far organized a few meeting with SPLM/SPLA(IO) leadership in Khartoum and others through teleconferences.
For the past five months Machar has made very limited appointments starting with appointment of a Sector Commander for SPLA-IO forces in Central Equatoria to appointment of Executive Director for Humanitarians Affairs.
While the SPLA-IO leadership remains intact, more restructuring is expected in the political wing(SPLM-IO) to replace a few senior politicians who have defected to Kiir’s side.
Machar, who controls forces in the three regions of South Sudan, is currently in South Africa, initially on medical grounds; however, his influence both in South Sudan and in Diaspora remain very strong.
