September 3rd 2018 (Nyamilepedia) – Fierce fighting has erupted this morning in the village of Mabil of Kuergeng Payam in Guit County of Unity state between government troops and SPLA-IO forces, the SPLA have said in a statement.

According to the SPLA official spokesperson Maj. Gen. Lul Ruai Koang, fighting started after rebel forces led by the country’s former First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar moved out of their position to attack government troops.

“The SPLA would like to inform the region that heavy [fighting] is underway at Bil village (Mabil) in Kuer Geng County, in Northern Liech State,” he said in a brief statement seen by the Nyamilepedia.

He said opposition troops loyal to Machar had moved out of their position in Weimuon island to attack the government force stationed at Kiergeng saying the fighting is ongoing.

“IO fighters loyal to Dr. Machar coming from Wei- Muon Islands attacked SPLA ‘s defensive trenches at Bil village at about 10:55PM today,” he said.

The Nyamilepedia could not reach the SPLA-IO for comment but several residents told the Nyamilepedia that fighting is still ongoing as of the time of writing this report but could not identify who attacked who.
