Oct 20, 2017(Nyamilepedia) — At least 17 people died on Thursday night in north-eastern Jonglei State, near the state capital, a Local Commission David Deng Manyok confirms.

Speaking to DPA journalist, Commissioner Deng Manyok confirms that seventeen people died on Thursday night when a boat capsized on the River Nile in South Sudan’s new Jonglei State.

According to the Local Commissioner, the boat sank on its way to the state capital, Bor, killing 17 people and leaving five others in critical conditions.

The commissioner believes that the boat was carrying a total of 30 people together with grains, fuel and dried fish. He thinks the boat sank because it was overloaded.

According to Moses Chol, the new Jonglei State Minister for Transport and Fisheries “government will take serious measures in regulating the loading of boats.”

River Nile is the main water transport in the country used by both the civil population and also by the warring factions.
