In a statement seen by Nyamilepedia, the junta dissolved the government and the national assembly, and suspended the constitution, seizing control of the country after two days of unrest at army camps in the capital.

The announcement, signed on Monday by Lieutenant Colonel Paul Henri Sandaogo Damiba and read by another officer on state television, said the military seizure of power was done without any violence incurred and detained anti-coup elements are in good conditions.

“The country’s borders were also temporarily closed”, the statement added.

The statement was made in the name of a previously unheard of entity identified as Patriotic Movement for Safeguard and Restoration or (MPSR) according to its French language acronym.

“.. The MPSR which includes all sections of the army, has decided to end President Kabore’s ruling today”, the statement emphasized.

According to the statement, the deterioration of the security situation and what it dubbed as Kabore’s inability to bring the nation together effectively forced the military to step in.

The statement stressed that, MPSR would restore constitutional order within a suitable and reasonable time adding that a nationwide curfew would be declared.

It’s not the first time for junta to organize coup in Burkina Faso. The country has been going through numerous coup d’etat since its Independence in 1960.
