The incident happened on Wednesday last week when youth from President Kiir’s home state of Warrap attacked the Bul-nuer community of Mayom county, left dozens dead and walked away with over 20,000 heads of cattle.

At least 17 people were confirmed dead after the attack and 12 among the deceased were confirmed to be women.

“There was an attack from Warrap State armed youth. They came to attack a place called Boumria in the defunct Bulwek county, greater Mayom” Said John Kang Bol, the director-general of the state ministry of information on Thursday.

“There was an attack from Warrap State armed youth. They came to attack a place called Boumria in the defunct Bulwek county, greater Mayom, leaving 16 people dead,” he continued.

The Director General, John Kang Bol, emphasized that at least a 6-year old and a ten-year old were killed.

“Among the dead are six and ten years old children.” Kang said.

According to John Kang, some of the wounded patients were referred to Akobo and others were airlifted to Juba for further treatments.

“Seven people were taken to Akobo and eight others were taken to Juba for further treatment but en route to Juba one person died on the way. There is a likelihood that the numbers of people who die may rise in the coming days,” he added.

The neighboring Nuer and Dinka communities of Warrap and Unity States have been engaged in revenge attacks and cattle raids for the past many years.

In the previous raids the governors of the Tri-States of Unity, Lake and Warrap agreed that any cattle raided from one of these neighboring states would be returned once they are brought by the armed youth and Unity State governor, Joseph Nguen Manytuil, has tried to return some cattle in the past; however, it remains to be seem if the authorities in Warrap will return the same gesture.

Attempt to disarm the youth, who are heavily armed, to reduce the violence have failed so far.
