The CS said that school reopening that was scheduled for January 2021 could come closer as COVID 19 cases in the country are declining.

These calls come as Kenya has gone for eleven days with below 5% daily positive cases that is advised by WHO.

Prof Magoha said that it is time to re-look at the school reopening process with reference to the facts availed to the ministry.

“We have looked at all aspects, starting from the universities and tertiary alleges, TVETS and TTCs, secondary school’s centers, primary school centers and we as the stake holders have come to a consensus that, indeed, it is time to relook.” The CS said.

He also expressed concern over social distancing especially in public schools.

He said the government will look at ways in which this can be achieved.

“In schools that social distance will be hard to be achieved, the government will provide washable masks for the pupils.” Prof. Magoha said;

Boarding schools have also been advised to use dining halls as dormitories in order to achieve social distances.

The CS directed education stake holders to continue looking into issues that would affect the reopening of school.

Their findings will be presented in the largest stakeholder’s conference that will be held before or on 25th September this year.

Prof. Magoha expressed his displeasure by the media saying that the fourth estate keeps on “misquoting him”.

He reiterated that school reopening schedule could change depending on the direction of the pandemic.

“Decisions regarding the reopening of learning institutions may change as informed by the reports obtained by the ministry of health, prevailing circumstances ad increased knowledge of COVD 19,” he said.

This meeting was called following President Kenyatta directive to hold the largest stakeholders conference within three weeks in his previous nation address in August.
