December 17th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – South Sudan’s president Salva Kiir said on Monday that he and the country’s main armed opposition leader Dr. Riek Machar Teny have agreed to formed the long-awaited unity government, the Reuters reported.

This come after the two men met several times last and this week to discuss the outstanding issues hampering the formation of the Reconstituted Transitional Government of National Unity (RTGoNU).

Yesterday, the presidential adviser on security Tutkew Gatluak who is also the chairman of the peace implementing body, National Pre-Transitional Committee (NPTC), said there was progress in the ongoing Kiir-Machar face-to-face meeting being conducted in Juba.

The two men signed a revitalized version of a 2015 peace agreement in 2018 to end the six-year-old civil war. The agreement provided for the formation of a transitional government which would govern the country for three years with Kiir maintaining his role as president.

The deal also enable for Machar’s return as first vice president which he held prior to collapse of the 2015 peace agreement in July 2016 that led to his flight.
