Kiir “won’t accept” another extension for unity gov’t formation – official

August 15th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – South Sudan President Salva Kiir Mayardit won’t accept another postponement for the formation of unity government, a senior government official told the Nyamilepedia this afternoon pointing to an improved security situation for opposition leaders in Juba and in most part of the country.

South Sudan government and opposition groups in September last year signed a revitalized version of a 2015 peace deal to end the war.

Based on the agreement, there should have been a transitional government in place by May 12 but delays in pre-transitional activities led to a November 12 extension for that.

In a letter seen by Nyamilepedia on Tuesday, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), the regional bloc which mediated the South Sudan peace deal, invited the parties to attend to Addis Ababa to discuss lack of progress for the pre-transitional activities.

A senior government official speaking to Nyamilepedia this afternoon said President Salva Kiir will not accept new extension.

He said activities which would not be in place by November 12 will be worked on together by the parties once a unity government is I’m place pointing to a improved security situation for Machar and other opposition groups across the country.

“President Kiir won’t accept that at all cost,” the government official said of Kiir’s view on extending the pre-transitional if activities are not ready by November 12.

“Dr. Lam is here in Juba, Changson is here and everybody is here, so what is so special about Riek Machar?” the official asked.
