South Sudan’s Machar meets top UN envoy in Addis Ababa
July 23rd 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – South Sudan’s main armed opposition leader Dr. Riek Machar Teny-Dhurgon has met the Under-Secretary General and Special Representative of the Secretary General of United Nations on Sexual Violence in Conflict (SRSG-SVC) Pramila Patten in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa, Machar’s SPLM-IO said in a statement.
Machar left the Sudanese capital Khartoum on Thursday following an invitation from the United Nations official to discuss the ongoing peace process and sexual violence in the world’s youngest nation.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the group said the meeting between Machar and the UN envoy was successful and discussed the ongoing peace process in addition to reports of sexual violence in the country.
“The SPLM/SPLA (IO) Chairman and Commander in Chief of the people’s movement SPLM/SPLA (IO), H.E Dr. Riek Machar Teny-Dhurgon (PhD) and his accompanying delegation this evening met with Under-Secretary General and Special Representative of the Secretary General of United Nations on Sexual Violence in Conflict (SRSG-SVC), Mrs. Pramila Patten, in Addis Ababa Ethiopia,” the SPLM-IO said in a statement seen by the Nyamilepedia.
“The meeting was cordial and fruitful [and] centered on issues of peace and sexual violence in the region,” the statement added.
It further said that the main armed opposition leader urged the top UN official to “to support peace implementation to stop suffering of the people of South Sudan.”
