Opposition governor of Sobat “shocked” by Jikany infighting in Ethiopia refugee camp

January 13th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – The Sudan People’s Liberation Movement in Opposition (SPLM-IO) Governor of Sobat state, Maj. Gen. James Banak Riang, said on Sunday that his government was shocked when it learned the “brothers” infighting in an Ethiopia refugee camp.

On Sunday morning, fighting erupted between rival Jikany community sections in a refugee camp in the neighboring Ethiopia killing six (6) people and wounding thirty-eight (38) others.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the SPLM-IO Sobat state government said they were shocked when they were informed about the incident saying they condemn in the strongest term what he termed as barbaric act.

“The news of that senseless communal fight between our youth, came to us as a complete surprise and that shocked us all. As leadership of Sobat Sate, we condemn that barbaric act in the strongest terms possible,” the governor said in the statement extended to the Nyamilepedia.

“This is an unexpected tragic event that came in time when our people are seriously looking for peace and tranquility amongst themselves and with the rest of South Sudanese communities entirely,” he stressed.

The governor further sent his condolences to the family of those who met their fate and to the entire community of Jikany Nuer-section.

“On behalf of Sobat State’s leadership, our people and my own behalf, I would like to send my heartfelt and sincere condolences to the families, relatives and friends of our community members who lost their precious lives as a result of incident between brothers Gajiok and Gajaak at Kule Refugees Camp in Ethiopia,” he said.

Kule is a refugee camp in Ethiopia’s Western Gambella region and has been a home to thousands of Nuer refugees fleeing violent in South Sudan.
