Opinion: It’s the Right sider not Wrong sider that wins: A case of Gen. Gatwech Dual and Dr. Riek Machar

By Dak Buoth Riek-Gaak

4th August, 2021The question that people should be asking from the bitter fall-out between the Sudan People’s Liberation in Opposition (SPLM-IO) Chief of Staff, Gen. Simon Gatwech Dual and his erstwhile Chairman and the first Vice President, Dr. Riek Machar should not be about ‘who will defeat who’. This one is a shallow question that can be asked by cowards with a view of joining the one who is said to be the likely winner prior to the commencement of the confrontation.

The legitimate question that South Sudanese and other people should be asking is: who is right in the disagreement between these two senior SPLM-IO leaders? And the moment you point fingers at one of them to be right, then its that person who will defeat the other.  This is because it’s always the one on the right side of the war that wins the wars and not the wrong siders.

In addition, remember that it’s not the individual/s or personalities that wins, what normally wins is the idea. In other words, the right sider is on the side of justice which is the perfect place for all sound minded and patriots of any nation the world over.

For instance, the war of South Sudan independence started way back in 1955; and as we all know those who started this war perished in the process, but the idea did not die. When the late comers of 1983 emerged and restarted the war, their pioneer leader died but his deputy Salva Kiir won the war of independence in 2011, thus the idea won.

On 3rd August, 2021, we learnt via Radio Tamazuj that ‘‘Prominent military leaders of the SPLA-IO have this evening announced the ouster of SPLM/A-IO Commander in Chief Dr. Riek Machar Teny replacing him with General Simon Gatwech Dual, the former SPLA-IO Chief of General Staff.

“General Simon Gatwech Dual, Chief of Staff of the army, General Thomas Mabor Dhul, commander of Division 3 and General Johnson Olony, the commander of Division 1 attended the meeting.”

Now if we say General Gatwech is right for example and he ended up getting killed in the process, God forbid, then our idea to have a unified and properly trained national army through security arrangements will continue. Hence, people will continue arguing and agitating for this provision of the peace agreement until it’s achieved, because this status quo will affect us individually and collectively as a nation, therefore something ought to be done already and now is the time. And the day it’s achieved, we shall say the idea won and by extension General Gatwech.

I may not be in the field, but from afar I know that General Simon Gatwech Dual is right. From the onset I knew Dr. Riek Machar will not struggle for security arrangements provided for in the 2018 Khartoum peace agreement that he signed. He failed to take in his forces in 1997 when he signed the first Khartoum Peace Accord with former Sudanese President Omar El Bashir, and he did the same in 2002 when he signed peace with late former SPLM Chairman Dr. John Garang De Mabior who died in the plane crash in 2005.

There are no miracles that he will achieve the security arrangements as provided in the 2018 peace accord owing to the fact that the period of the agreement is almost over. As such let General Gatwech give this a try, and if he died in the combat, he will be succeeded immediately because many South Sudanese want an equal, secure and democratic South Sudan governed by the rule of law where there would be no first, second- or third-class citizens.

Having said that, the soldiers who are in cantonment areas should make up their minds either to wait while wailing of hunger or stand up and go where they are supposed to go.
