UNMISS delegation meets President Kiir on peace implementation

September 12, 2021—The delegation of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) led by the Undersecretary General of the Department for Peace Operations Mr. Jean Pierre Lacroix has met President Kiir on Friday, April 10, 2021.

The meeting between UN officials and the head of state focused on the issues pertaining bilateral relations, status of Abyei, situation of UNISFA in Abyei and as well as progress of the ongoing implementation of the Revitalized Peace Agreement.

In a statement obtained by Nyamilepedia, the meeting between Kiir and UN delegation was witnessed by the Minister of Presidential Affairs, Dr. Barnaba Marial Benjamin and Mr. Mayik Ayii, the newly appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.

“In attendance were, the Minister of Presidential Affairs Hon Dr Barnaba Marial Benjamin and the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Hon Mayiik Ayii Deng”,the statement reads.

According to the statement, Dr Barnaba Marial Benjamin said, President Kiir had a successful meeting with the United Nations representatives on the issues of Abyei and the implementation of the Revitalized Peace Agreement.

The head of the UNMISS delegation Mr. Jean Pierre acknowledged the positive steps Kiir has achieved towards peace implementation.

“The Undersecretary General for the Department of Peace Operations, Mr Jean Pierre Lacroix, applauded His Excellency President Salva Kiir Mayardit for making positive progress on the implementation of the Revitalised Peace Agreement”,the statement added.

He stressed that the meeting also focused on how UNISFA can continue to provide protection to the people of Abyei.
