July 13th 2018 (Nyamilepedia) – The Troika countries, namely the United States, Britain and Noway, on Friday condemned the extension, by the South Sudan parliament, of the government’s term urging Kiir to reject what they call an ‘illegal” process.

Yesterday, members of the South Sudan National Legislature unanimously passed the bill that extended the tenure of the president and that of their own for an additional three years which ends in 2021.

In a statement extended to the Nyamilepedia, the world powers said the decision was not in line with the ongoing efforts by the region to end the ongoing civil strife in the country urging president Kiir to reject it.

“The Troika are deeply concerned by the South Sudan Transitional National Legislative Assembly’s passage of a bill to unilaterally extend the transitional government’s term, and calls on President Kiir to reject it,” the Troika said in a joint statement.

They said the process undermines the ongoing peace talks in Khartoum and will not bring a lasting peace to the country rather than prolonging the civil war which is in its fifth year now.

“This move will not lead to lasting peace and we do not consider this as a legitimate step. Without a negotiated and inclusive agreement, there can be no sustainable peace in South Sudan,” the trio further said.

The statement further urged the South Sudan government put attention to the ongoing peace talks in Khartoum as for the sack of inclusive government that would take the country to free and fair elections.

“The South Sudanese authorities should urgently focus on negotiating an inclusive transitional governing arrangement that will lead to free and fair elections and new leadership in the most expeditious and responsible manner possible,” further said the joint statement.

According to the 2015 peace deal, the government’s term expires in August this Year.
