Sudanese rebel leader not killed during last week’s plane crash in Juba – statement

August 24, 2020 (Nyamilepedia) – Sudanese rebel leader General Abdel Aziz Adam al-Hilu was not inside the cargo plane which crashed in South Sudan’s capital Juba on Friday, a statement by the SPLM-North/al-Hilu said.

Social media rumors have alleged that al-Hilu who is in Juba for the Sudanese peace talk was killed in the plane crash which killed eight people including the pilot on Friday.

“We confirm that Comrade Commander Abdel Aziz Adam al-Hilu is fine and he was not among the passengers of this plane,” said Amar Amoun the Movement’s Secretary-General in a statement released on Saturday evening.

The statement by the senior SPLM-N official accused unnamed parties of spreading fake news on social saying that there is “no reason to make him among its passengers.”

Al-Hilu’s SPLM-North faction has been in talk with the Sudanese transitional government. Last week, the rebel faction anniunced that it was withdrawing from talks demanding an immediate removal of General Mohamed Hamdan Daglo from leadership of the government delegation at peace talks.

Later on, the government of South Sudan which mediates the between the Sudanese factions and the government announced that it was suspending talks indefinitely.
