Acting on a tip off, the Sudanese army set up an ambush near the border of Gedaref where they arrested several donkey carts carrying more than 95,000 rounds of drugs.

According to Sudan News Agency (SUNA), the operation took place upon information provided by the military intelligence at the border strip about the “smuggling of ammunition to a neighbouring country.”

Sudanese troops set up an ambush in one of the border villages in Quraishah locality (near the Ethiopian border) and arrested a number of caravans carrying ammunition packed inside plastic bags.

The Sudanese state of Gedaref shares a border with the Ethiopian Tigray and Amhara regions.

On Friday, Sudan’s Gaderef and Kassala states closed the border with Ethiopia and deployed troops to prevent the insurgents from crossing to the country.

Sudan closed its border Thursday with Ethiopia after tensions in the Tigray region erupted in recent days.

Authorities in Kassala state said the closure is intended to stop any potential entry of fighters into Sudan. The acting governor of the state would also visit border areas to inspect the situation.

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Mohammed declared war on the Tigray region accusing the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) of attacking a military camp in the region. He ordered the army to counter the attack.
