November 28th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – South Sudan government on Wednesday agreed with the Sudanese government to extend the oil transit agreement which was signed by the two countries in late 2012 in Addis Ababa.
The Undersecretary in Sudan’s Ministry of Energy and Mining Hamid Suleiman said: “We have reached a great understandings by agreeing to extend the agreement on the transfer of crude until March 2022.”
The government of Sudan – Suleiman said – has asked its South Sudan counterpart to pay the outstanding debts in kind. There is currently a debt of $661 million owed by South Sudan to Sudan. Suleiman added that talks will resume next week over the issue.
South Sudan split from Sudan in July 2011 taking with it 75% of the country’s oil. Since then, Sudan has been under economic woes whereas South Sudan descended into a civil war mostly fought along tribal lines.
