December 5th 2018 (Nyamilepedia) – A South Sudanese Member of Parliament (MP) said last week that he and his colleagues in the South Sudan’s parliament are the least paid legislators in the world compared to their counterparts in Uganda, Kenya and South Africa.

Currently, South Sudanese MPs are paid about 47 United States Dollars, something that can be 9, 400 South Sudanese Pounds.

Paul Yoane, the Chairperson of the Information Committee in the South Sudan’s current Transitional National Legislative Assembly (TNLA) said they despite the low payment, he and his colleagues are serving the country because they love it.

Ugandan MPs are getting probably $8,000, Kenya $17, 000, South Africa $23,000 – but here because of our love for our country, we are getting $47,” he said during the commemoration of the Juba Monitor’s seventh anniversary.

In July, South Sudan government donated 1.6 million United States Dollars to spend on car and housing, the highest amount paid to the parliamentarian since the establishment of the parliament.

South Sudan descended into civil war in December 2013 following a flare-up of violence during a national conventional for the ruling SPLM party later shifting to clashes within the South Sudan’s Presidential Guards igniting a civil war.

The Africa’s most brutal conflict killed hundreds of thousands and displaced millions. It has since inflicted a sharp economic collapse of the one of the Africa’s promising economies that mostly depend on the oil export.
