South Sudan rounds up 34 people in relation to coronavirus patient

April 6, 2020 (Nyamilepedia) — South Sudan government said on Monday that it had rounded up thirty-four people who were in possible contact with a UN staffer who tested positive for the novel coronavirus on Sunday.

Speaking to South Sudan Broadcasting Corporation (SSBC) on Monday, the undersecretary in the ministry of health said they had discovered 34 people who were in contact to the COVID-19 patient and were being investigated for the virus.

“We have found around 34 people in connection to the patient who tested positive for the coronavirus on Sunday and now they are quarantined and medical investigation for the virus are underway,” he said.

He further added that they are also investigating four (4) usupected cases in the several parts of the country. He said alerts were issued in Torit, Tonj, Maban and Northern Bahr El-Ghazal state’s capital Aweil.

“Now we are investigating four alerts coming from Torit, Tonj and Maban. We will update the public as we will announce their results in the next few days,” he added.

He further urged the public to adhere to the health measures provided by the taskforce and the World Health Organization (WHO) to minimize the risk of spreading the virus.

South Sudan government on Sunday announced that it has tested its first positive coronavirus case of a foreign UN staffer who arrived to the country from the Netherlands via Ethiopia on February 28.

The late government discovery of the patient has sparked criticisms and fears from the general public who decried the government “negligence” of the fight on the coronavirus also know as COVID-19.
