August 28th 2018 (Nyamilepedia) – South Sudan peace talks in Khartoum has been ended by the Sudanese mediation without any formal agreement between the government and the opposition as two main armed opposition groups declined to sign the preliminary peace deal proposed by the Sudanese mediation.

Sudanese government was mandated by the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) to mediate between South Sudanese government and a number of armed and non armed opposition groups.

Early this month,  the parties signed a peace agreement that will, if implemented,  see the return of Machar to his former position as the first vice president and another three vice-presidents position be created in addition to the existing one to make four.

Sources told the Nyamilepedia this afternoon that the SPLM-IO, the main armed opposition group fighting the government has declined to signed peace agreement together with other armed opposition groups including the South Sudan Opposition Alliance led by Gabriel Changson Lew.

Sudanese foreign minister Al-Dirdiry Ahmed announced the closure of the talks saying the Sudan have done what it had been tasked to do by the IGAD, the regional bloc.

“We are announcing the closing of the third round of talks that was referred to Khartoum by the IGAD summit. There is nothing left to be discussed. We have exhausted all the matters referred to us,” Al-Dirdiri told journalists in Khartoum this evening.

He said the agreement which was signed by the South Sudan government and opposition groups under it will be referred to the IGAD heads of state and government summit for adoption before the final signing of the deal.
