December 1st 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – The South Sudan Opposition Movements (SSOM), an alliance of non-signatories to the 2018 peace agreement, has welcomed the recent decision by the United States to recall its ambassador and re-evaluate ties with the government of President Salva Kiir Mayardit.

Last week, the United States recalled its ambassador to Juba saying it was re-evaluating ties with the South Sudan government. At one point, the United States government referred to South Sudan government as “unelected” angering Juba.

The US said it would work together with regional powers to make sure that permanent peace is achieved in the world’s youngest nation whose population is internally displaced with millions seeking refuge in neighboring countries.

SSOMA particularly applauds the United States’ wish to work in partnership with the region to establish a new paradigm to achieve peace and a successful political transition in South Sudan,” the statement partly reads.

SSOMA has always been consistent that lasting peace in South Sudan can only be achieved once the fundamental the root causes of the conflict are addressed in negotiations that are inclusive of all stakeholders in the country driven by the interest of suffering masses,” it further noted.
