South Sudan opposition group suspends activities over coronavirus crisis

April 4, 2020 (Nyamilepedia) — A South Sudan opposition group has suspended its activities over the outbreak of the Coronavirus, a spokesman said in a statement extended to Nyamilepedia on Thursday.

Wesley Kosa, the spokesman of South Sudan National Movement for Change (SSNMC) said in the statement that the leadership of the group will however continue monitoring the pandemic.

“This is to inform our supporters, sympathizers and the entire people of South Sudan that due to the outbreak and global spread of the coronavirus, the leadership of the South Sudan National Movement for Change (SSNMC) as a response to the evolving impact of COVID-19, has temporarily suspended all its physical activities as safety measures,” the statement partly reads.

“The SSNMC officials will continue to carry on their normal National duties remotely through electronic means. The SSNMC leadership will continue to prioritize the health and safety of all the members and the entire South Sudanese people,” the statent added.

The statement further urged the South Sudanese people to take precautionary measures set by the World Health Organization (WHO) as well as the local authorities to maintain safety.

“Therefore as safety precautions, we would like to argue all South Sudanese to maintain the high safety standard that is set by the credible public health institutions such as, Center for Disease Control and Prevention (DCD), World Health Organization (WHO) and your local public health authority,” the statement said.

“To our brave and resilient people of South Sudan, as you continue to resist and face this barbaric and doctorial regime of president Kiir which has failed to deliver the most needed social service to the people of South Sudan, let us continue to stand together during this difficult time of the coronavirus pandemic which has added more suffering to our people,” it added.
