South Sudan opposition group rejects scheduled meeting with IGAD special envoy

February 28th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – A South Sudan holdout opposition umbrella on Wednesday declined to attend a scheduled meeting with IGAD special envoy for South Sudan, amb. Ismail Wais saying they were not issued with prior or written notification.

The South Sudan National Democratic Alliance (SSNDA) led by Gen. Thomas Cirilo who is also the leader of the opposition National Salvation Front (NAS) said in a statement that it is willing to meet the IGAD diplomat but should be with a prior written notice.

“While the leadership of SSNDA is willing to engage with the Office of IGAD Special Envoy for South Sudan,” the statement said.

“We urge that such a meeting should be formal with prior notice given in advance to enable the leadership of SSNDA to have time to prepare,” it added.

The statement further stressed they have “regrettably” cancelled the meeting due to poor timelt notification by the regional body.

“Regrettably, due to lack of formal and timely notification by IGAD of its intention to meet the leadership of SSNDA, the proposed meeting did not take place as scheduled,” the statement further stressed.
