Dec 23, 2015(Nyamilepedia) —- The Chief of South Sudan army, Gen. Paul Malong Awan, who bitterly protested the signing of peace agreement and the return of huge advanced team of SPLM/SPLA in Opposition, returned to the national capital on Tuesday afternoon.
According to a member of national security, who spoke on condition of anonymity due to sensitivity of the case, Gen. Malong returned to Juba on Tuesday afternoon at the order of President.
Gen. Malong, a war veteran who served two controversial terms as the governor of Northern Bhar El Ghazal took over the army in mid 2013 and started recruiting and training over 15, 000 tribal militia known as Mathiang Anyoor or Dotkubeny that are believed to have been involved in door-to-door massacres of the Nuer ethnic group, the tribe of South Sudan’s incoming First Vice President, Dr. Riek Machar Teny.
According to reliable sources, Gen. Malong left Juba for his home town of Aweil, Northern Bhar el Ghazal, on Friday in protest to an order by President Salva Kiir to welcome the advance team of SPLM/SPLA despite claims of insecurity or lack of accommodation by some government officials.
The source believes that president Salva Kiir was responding to the head of Joint Monitoring and Evacuation Commission, President Festus Mogae, who demands that the opposition should not miss the second meeting of JMEC.
Gen. Malong, who promised upon taking the oath in April 2014 to end the conflict militarily or capture Dr. Riek Machar in 30 days, has been committed to end the war for the last two years, however, South Sudan conflict has changes many faces in the last 21 months.
Unlike the agreements that have been violated many times, the welcoming of SPLM/SPLA advance was a collective responsibility comprising of government officials, members of JMEC, members of SPLA-IO and members of former detainees.
While the authority of Juba International Airport ensured that the airport remained opened past its regular operating hours, some generators were turned off earlier enough to preserve some fuel to light the airport for safe landing of SPLM/SPLA advanced team.
