March 3rd 2020 (Nyamilepedia) – The deadlock between South Sudan peace partners over division of ministries may continue for weeks as SPLM-IG insists to control key ministries, a senior opposition official said.
“We don’t think this deadlock will end now. We would be thankful to God if it ends in the next few weeks,” the senior opposition official told Nyamilepedia on condition of anonymity.
“The [SPLM-]IG is seeking to control key ministries. We, in the SPLM-IO believe that the ministries should be divided equally between the parties to the revitalized peace agreement,” he added.
Members of the SPLM-IO and their partners in SPLM-IG have been on the negotiating table since last month trying to agree on who take what ministry from the 35 ministries established by the revitalized peace agreement.
President Salva Kiir on February 22 appointed Dr. Riek Machar, the SPLM-IO leader, as First Vice President in accordance with the revitalized peace agreement.
The two are expected to form a coalition government which will govern the country for a duration of 36 months.
