Rights group calls for the release of journalist missing in Western Equatoria

August 30th 2018 (Nyamilepedia) – The Community Empowerment for Progress (CEP) in a statement issued today has urged the governor of Gbudue to intervene so as to secure the release of  South Sudanese journalist who went missing three weeks ago after being kidnapped by a state members of the organized forces.

The journalist according to the statement went missing three weeks ago after he was picked up by some armed men quoting his wife.

“The whereabouts of a Human Rights Activist in Gbudue remains unknown ter he was picked by armed men three weeks ago, according to his family Bashir Ahmed, who works for the Civil Society Human Rights Forum, was taken from his residence in Yambio town since the 8th of August 2018,” the statement of the CEP said.

The civil society organization said the kidnappers are members of the South Sudan’s security after his wife identified the number plate of the vehicle which took him.

“It was a vehicle that they written on its body 006 they were not in uniform but one of them was carrying a gun,” the organization quoted his wife Nora as saying.

The statement also said they contacted the state minister of information who instead said he was not aware of the incident involving members of the organized forces.

It further said the incident is worse of its kind and a bad precedent in regards to the fate of activists and journalists in the state.

“It is serious act that is disturbing. Activist Bashir Ahmed disappearance in Yambio is worse development on the fate of activists in Yambio. Marking the international day for disappearance today 30th August 2018, CEPO is urging the authorities of Gbudue State to kindly rescue the life of activist Bashir Ahmed urgently,” the statement said.

He said his whereabouts should be disclosed to his family and be made to face legal charges in case he is suspected of doing any thing in contrary to the laws.

“Where about he is, should be reveal to the family and he should face legal due process if he is suspect in conflict with the law Mr. Edmund Yakani, Executive Director of CEPO said we are expecting peace to prevail soon while yet we are experiencing cases of activities arrest and detention,” it further said.
