Reports: Fighting in Yei between gov’t and opposition troops as Machar visits Juba

September 9th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – Fighting has erupted between government troops and holdout opposition groups in Yei river state few hours after main armed opposition leader Dr. Riek Machar arrived in Juba.

Sources told the Nyamilepedia this afternoon that fighting erupted shortly before Machar’s arrival in Juba this morning at a gold-mining area in the Central Equatoria state.

Fighting started this morning between the National Salvation Front (NAS) forces of General Thomas Cirilo and the government troops,” one source told the Nyamilepedia this afternoon from Yei town.

The fighting is according to what we hears is still going on and the rebels are reportedly being defeated,” the source added.

Machar arrived in Juba on Monday for a talk on the peace implementation with President Salva Kiir Mayardit. Officials allied to the main armed opposition leader said their boss may stay in Juba for days.

He was accompanied by the deputy chairman of Sudan’s Sovereignty Council General Mohamed Hamdan Daglo/Hemeti who is currently meeting Sudanese rebel groups under the auspices of President Salva Kiir.
