July 12th 2018 (Nyamilepedia) – South Sudan’s main armed opposition faction on Thursday urged the region and the international community to condemn the extension of Kiir’s term and decease from recognizing the new government of the same kind in Juba.

South Sudan parliament on Thursday extended its term and that of the Salva Kiir’s government sparking uproar both from the opposition and a number of world countries including the United States which warned the government of this move last week.

The United States last week warned the South Sudan government of extending it tenure saying what became a new government today will not be recognized by the Trump Administration and its allies.

In a statement today, the main armed opposition group under the leadership of the country’s former FVP Dr. Riek Machar condemned the extension and urged the region and the international community not to recognize it because it jeopardize the ongoing process.

“This illegitimate extension of the regime’s tenure however, is not just bad politics, but will create mistrust between the warring parties and other stakeholders. The SPLM/SPLA (IO) calls on the AU and the UN not to recognize this new regime, which has essentially become a rogue regime,” said a statement issued today and signed by the SPLM-IO Chairman of National Committee for Information and Public Relations Mabior Garang de’Mabior.

Mabior said in the statement that the decision by the South Sudan government to extend its term is unfortunate saying it affirms government’s unwillingness in the peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict.

“This is unfortunate and is an affirmation that the regime is not interested in a peaceful resolution to the current civil war in South Sudan,” he said in the statement.

Mabior said the ongoing peace process which is being jeopardized by the South Sudan government would have legitimized the government’s term which would have made a legitimate government recognized by all.

“The peace agreement we are currently negotiating under IGAD mediation, would have legitimately extended the tenure of the regime in Juba, signalling a new era of peace in our country,” Mabior further said in the statement.
