This comes less than a month after Lam won President Kiir’s confidence over many senior SPLM members that include Gen. Kuol Manyang Juuk, the former governor of Jonglei and former Minister of Defense and Veteran Affairs, who is currently a senior presidential advisor.

In a statement obtained by Nyamilepedia from Presidential Press Unit, Salva Kiir Mayardit graced the swearing-in of the newly appointed Acting Secretary General.

“His Excellency President Salva Kiir Mayardit in his capacity as the Chairman of Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM ), presided over the swearing-in ceremony of Cde Peter Lam Both as the Acting Secretary-General of SPLM”, the statement reads.

While addressing SPLM cadres at the ceremony, president Kiir urged the people who are still in possession of fire arms to put down their guns and join the peace process.

In his part, Lam who was appointed last month to the top party position pledged to organize and structure the party organs throughout the country and promised to implement the fundamental vision of the SPLM.

“SPLM Acting Secretary General Peter Lam Buoth said, he will work towards restructuring all the SPLM organs in the states, adding that he will also embark on the vision and mission of the party that aims at taking towns to the people in the rural areas”, Lam said during swearing-in.

Peter Lam Both was appointed on 17th of August 2021 as Acting Secretary General of the SPLM by the SPLM Chairman Gen. Salva Kiir Mayardit, succeeding the country’s former minister of parliamentarian affairs, Jemma Nunu Kumba who is now serving as the first female speaker of the National Parliament.

Shortly after Lam was appointed by president Kiir, some SPLM cadres, who are believed to be entourages of Gen. Kuol Manyang Juuk, criticized the appointment of Peter Lam Both and termed it “illegal” citing lack of official document confirming the appointment of Peter Lam by the SPLM Chairman.
