August 19, 2015(Nyamilepedia) — Speaking from Addis Ababa, the Secretary General of SPLM, Pagan Amum, calls on Salva Kiir to return to Addis Ababa to sign the peace agreement that he and other stakeholders have signed.
According to Pagan, Salva Kiir has done enough consultations and therefore he should have signed the document as he promised while he was leaving for Addis Ababa.
“There is no really any more consultations, the president has consulted and finished all the consultations including last week on Friday and Sunday and the decision of the expanded leadership in Juba is to sign peace agreement…..The chairman of the SPLM, and the president of the Republic has agreed with him that we will be coming to Addis Ababa to sign the peace agreement that will bring back peace to our country” Pagan said.
“Actually he has agreed with us that we will be coming here to Addis Ababa to bring this senseless war to an end and bring peace to our people” He recalls.
The Secretary general has refused to return to Juba fearing his safety after the regime’s Spokesman and the Minister of Information, Michael Makuie Lueth, accused him of having defected from the government for signing the agreement.
On his part, Pagan clarifies that all the other stakeholders have signed the agreement and returned to Juba, and therefore his signing of the agreement did not mean he has defected
“It is not only me that sign alone, leaders of our churches, bishop Enoch signed it, also bishop Paride Taban signed it, uncle Gen. Joseph Lagu signed it, and also the representative of women signed it. This is an agreement that is signed by all representatives of South Sudanese” Pagan said.
“So I’m really surprised by the statement of Michael Makuei, saying that I have left the SPLM by signing. To sign a peace agreement, if signing peace is what will make me be thrown out, then I will be happy with that” He continue.
The Secretary General further recommend that if he has to be removed from the SPLM party for having signing the agreement, then he would accept the prize.
Despite that Pagan has not join the SPLM in Opposition he identifies himself as a “freedom fighter”, a slogan that is widely used by the rebels, and for such he remains optimistic.
Never Join the Government:
Pagan also explained that he did not join the government or SPLM-IG but returned to Juba as a partial fulfillment of Arusha Tripartite SPLM-Reunification Agreement.
“I never joined the government, I was not in any position in the government, I have not joined even the SPLM in goverment (SPLM-IG). We came to implement the Arusha Agreement. I have been reinstated as the Secretary General of SPLM, not the Secretary General of SPLM in the government.” he said.
“This story that I have joined the government is false, is a lie, I has never happened.” he added.
Despite the delay, Pagan is optimistic that Salva Kiir will sign the peace agreement and that is when he will also return to South Sudan.
“What needs to happen now is for president Salva Kiir to come back within these 14 or 15 days to sign this agreement and then we all go back to South Sudan to implement this peace agreement and also to implement the Arush Reunification Agreement” he said.
He believes that Salva Kiir wants peace and he[kiir] went to Addis Ababa with intention to sign the peace agreement but Mr. Kiir fears some people around him who do not want peace.
Without a peace agreement, however, Pagan pledged that he will not return to Juba.
Once he returns, Pagan declares that he will never join the “destruction of South Sudan” and “that will never happen”.
