The meeting, according to the office of South Sudan’s First Vice President’s, took place in the country’s capital, Juba yesterday on Tuesday.

Speaking to the media after meeting Dr. Machar, Ambassador Bader said the EU leaders had a lengthy discusssion with Dr. Machar on important protocols such as the security arrangment and other important issues that need to be done to move the country forward in the right direction.

“We had a very lengthy conversion on several issues. First of all was the implementation of the security arrangement and everything we need to make sure this country is going the right way,” said Bader.

“We, of course, mentioned a lot of issues that were preventing things from going as fast as we all wished to do, like the coronavirus that has brought some unnecessary delays, but I think things are going in the right way,” he added.

The ambassador said he remains optimistic the revitalized peace agreement will be fully implemented by the parties in South Sudan.

“We have more meetings of the council of ministers, we are waiting now for the national assembly to be dissolved, we have all these new appointments and I know the list prepared by the opposition is ready. So we hope it can happen very soon, maybe even this week,” he stressed.

Since the formation of the coalition government in February, there have been delays in the establishment of a national legislative assembly and continued absence of state and county administrations.

Security arrangment that include training, unification and deployment of forces is running about 2 years behind its original schedule.

The parties, however, are committed to cessation of hostilities agreements with exception of a few incidents like the recent defection in Kajo-keji that led to clashes between rival forces.
