August 7, 2021 — South Sudan’s First Vice President, Dr. Riek Machar Teny-Dhurgon, accuses his peace partners of bribing his heavyweight military generals to overthrow him to nullify the formation of the unified force, their graduation and deployment.
Machar, who is being hunted down left and right by his own former officials, is currently being guarded by the same peace partners in Juba but he regrets that the same friends are doing a lot of dirty work behind his back.
Addressing the political bureau on Wednesday, Aug 4th, the First Vice President accused their peace partners of bribing their military generals to oust him to sabotage the Revitalized Agreement of the Resolution of the Conflict in South Sudan.
“It is regrettable that the declaration was engineered and facilitated by peace spoilers who previously sponsored attacks on Turu cantonment site in Maiwut County, Liengkiji cantonment site in Maban County in upper Nile State, Morta training centre in Kajo Keji County, in Central Equatoria, the attacks on SPLA(IO) in Western Bahr Al-Ghazal and Western Equatoria States. The Political Bureau, therefore, condemns these grave violations in the strongest terms possible” The First Vice President Dr. Riek Machar said.
According to Machar, the peace spoilers bribed his Chief of Staff to derail the formation of the unified command, graduation and the deployment of the unified forces
“The declaration was Intended to derail the formation of the unified command, graduation and the deployment of the unified forces, which remain an outstanding priority after the conclusion of the reconstitution of the National Legislatures,” Dr. Machar continued.
Machar was ousted by peace spoilers in 2016 through his chief negotiator, Taban Deng Gai, and it is not surprising that history could repeat itself; however, he downplays the sensitivity of the matter.
While he believes that “the peace spoilers” sponsored defections and infightings in Maiwut, Liengkiji cantonment site in Maban, Morta training center in Kajo Keji and also in parts of Western Bahr el Ghazal; he remains committed to full implementation of the peace agreement.
Instead, he hoped to command the Chief of General Staff, Lt. Gen. Simon Gatwech Dual, Sector One Commander Lt. Gen. Johnson Olony Thabo and the SPLA-IO military spokesman, Brig. Gen. William Gatjiath Deng to join him in Juba but the three officers refused to comply and turned down his appointments, a decision that has now embroiled the armed opposition in another internal power wrangling.Â
On Saturday morning, Aug 7th, Machar’s forces advanced on Gatwech in Magenis at around 6:30am. Both sides lost more than 30 officers in a battle that lasted less than 45 minutes.Â
It is not clear how the two sides will resolve their differences; however, Machar has not been able to resolve internal crises since 2015.
