Kiir wants international community fund peace implementation

January 2nd 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – South Sudan President, Salva Kiir Mayardiit, on Monday appealed to the international community to fund the ongoing South Sudan peace implementation reiterating his readiness to negotiate a settlement with parties who are not signatories to the current peace agreemnt.

Kiir’s government and opposition groups including the main armed opposition group, the SPLM-IO, signed, in Addis Ababa, a revitalized version of a 2015 peace agreement in September 2018 following months of intense negtiation in the Sudanese capital Khartoum.

The pre-transitional period according to the peace agreement should only be eight months whereby all the pre-transitional activities should be completed by a National Pre-Transitional Committee (NPTC) formed by all the signatories.

However, in recent days, the partes, espcially the government and the SPLM-IO riased compalaints over financial constrainst facing the pre-transional activities including establishment of cantonment sites where troops could awaits amagamation process to form one national army.

Speaking to peace party leaders and members of the diplomatic corps at a dinar on the Eve of the New Year, Kiir appealed to the international community, according to the Eye Radio, to fund the peace implementation.

I  call upon our international partners to help with the necessary finance to implement the agreement,” he said.

The president reiterated the readiness of his government to find a solution with the holdout opposition groups who are not signatories to the September 2018 peace deal urging parties to the agreement to cooperate among themselves.

“My message to you all  and to those still holding out against peace is that, whatever it is, we can find a solution so that all of us participate in the business of building our country,” he said.

“I urge all of you to be patient, let us work together and not allow this peace to get out of our hands again,” he added.
