August 17, 2020 (Nyamilepedia) – South Sudan President, Salva Kiir Mayardit, has agreed to let General Akol Koor stay as director of the Internal Security Bureau (ISB) at the National Security Service (NSS) until the end of the transitional period in 2023, sources have said.

This comes after a meeting of reconciliation between Kiir and Akol which was mediated by the Jieng Council of Elders endorsed on Monday that Akol Koor stays in his position until the end of the transitional period in 2023.

“The meeting that was hosted by the JCE of elders yesterday on Sudan has convinced his excellency the president of the Republic of South Sudan to keep General Akol Koor to maintain his position as the NSS director until 2023,” one source who attended the meeting told Nyamilepedia from Juba.

In recent weeks, tensions between Kiir and Akol Koor have worsened after the NSS chief opened a private airport in his home village of Awul in Tonj North County, something that angered President Salva Kiir.

The President, later on, ordered the shutdown of the private airstrip and there are reports that Akol Koor was at one point prevented by members of the Tiger Battalion from traveling to Warrap last week.
