Khartoum unveil new power sharing proposal

July 16th 2018 (Nyamilepedia) – The Sudanese mediation on Sunday unveiled a new power sharing proposal for the South Sudanese parties who are currently negotiating a peace in the Sudanese capital Khartoum.

According to the new peace plan, President Salva Kiir and opposition leader Dr. Riek Machar would head the transitional government of national unity as President and First Vice President respectively.

The government will nominate two vice presidents and the opposition would nominate the remaining two one of which must be a woman.

Also according to the new peace agreement, the transitional government of national unity would be composed of 35 ministers. 17 of the ministers would be for the government, 10 for Machar’s SPLM-IO and the other opposition divide the remaining eight as follow (South Sudan Opposition Alliance (SSOA), to have four, Former Detainees to get two, OPP to get 2.

There would be an extended parliament during the Transitional Period which would e made up of 550 and would be divide up as per the responsibility sharing mentioned below. The Council of state would be extended to be made up of 50 members.

As for the responsibility sharing, the government would maintain the previouse 55% the SPLM-IO to maintain its 25% and other opposition groups to have 20%.

According to the proposal, the current controversial 32 states will remain and the the responsibility sharing at the national level would also apply to the states as well.
