April 5, 2020 (Nyamilepedia) — South Sudan parties to the revitalized unity government have not reached any agreement over the allocation of state governors and talks are still ongoing over the matter, a senior government official said on Sunday.

Information Minister Michael Makuei who is also the government spokesman said social media reports that the parties reached an agreement over the allocation of states was not true saying talks were still ongoing.

“There is still nothing as such. We are still in deadlock because the opposition do not want to give up on taking 50% share of the state governors,” Makuei said. “So, there is no any agreement yet.”

Makuei’s comment comes as South Sudan social media users circulate reports that the parties reached an agreement over the allocation of state governors.

The reports alleged that the government agreed to only take five state governors in contrary to the government position stated by Makuei demanding six – out of ten – gubernatorial positions.

The reports also alleged that SPLM-IO has been given two states – Eastern Equatoria and Lakes – plus one Administrative Area: Ruweng.

The international community has been calling on the former foes to expedite the process of state governments formation saying the current power vacuum would jeopardize the country’s fight against the outbreak of the coronavirus also known as COVID-19.
